Warehouse Racking
Optimised Storage for Network Rail's National Distribution Centre
The Challenge: Centralising Operations to Maximize Efficiency
Network Rail consolidated multiple leased properties into a single 300,000 sq. ft National Distribution Centre (NDC) to improve cost efficiency, reduce road fleet mileage, and meet carbon footprint targets. The NDC required a high-capacity racking solution to store 120,000 small parts, ranging from rail clips to electrical cables, while accommodating future growth.
The Approach: A Flexible and Robust Racking Solution
After a rigorous tender process, Whittan’s Link51 was chosen to design and install the storage system. The solution included wide-aisle racking for 37,000 pallet locations, coil cradles for large electrical cables, and drive-in racking for slow-moving bulk items. Bespoke racking was also created to house irregular and oversized components.
The Solution: Maximising Space with Custom Racking Systems
Utilising the full height of the 12.5m eaves, Link51’s design doubled warehouse capacity. The racking systems were tailored to handle diverse items, including rail bogies, engine components, and long electrical materials. A dedicated 19-lane drive-in area added 1,800 pallet locations for bulk storage.
The Result: Increased Capacity and Significant Cost Benefits
The installation exceeded expectations, doubling storage capacity and enabling Network Rail to open the facility a month ahead of schedule. The efficient storage system improved organisation, reduced operational costs, and supported future growth.
Client Feedback: Outstanding Results and Service
"The racking installation has doubled our capacity and realised a cost benefit. Link51 fully exceeded our expectations, enabling us to open the warehouse early. The installation teams were superb – I cannot praise them highly enough!"
