Hellermann Tyton is a global leader in manufacturing and supplying products for fastening, fixing, and protecting cables, serving industries like automotive, aerospace, telecommunications, and construction. Operating 18 manufacturing sites across 36 countries, the company employs over 6,000 people worldwide. In the UK, Hellermann Tyton runs three manufacturing sites in Manchester, Plymouth, and Northampton, alongside distribution centres in Cannock and Ireland. To support their rapid growth, the company relocated their UK National Distribution Centre from Aldridge to a larger 75,000 sq. ft. facility in Cannock.
The Challenge: Expanding Warehouse and Storage Capacity
With sales and product offerings increasing significantly, Hellermann Tyton's 31,000 sq. ft. Aldridge facility could no longer meet operational demands. The relocation to a larger site aimed to:
- Expand storage capacity by over 120%.
- Enhance operational efficiency to manage a growing product range.
- Prepare for future business growth.
To achieve this, Hellermann Tyton enlisted logistics consultants Davies & Robson to oversee the tender process for the new warehouse's racking and storage systems.
The Approach: Scalable and Efficient Warehouse Storage Solutions
Link51, a Whittan brand, was awarded the contract for its comprehensive and cost-effective storage solution, which included:
- Wide Aisle Racking: Offering 4,140 pallet spaces (up from 3,000 in Aldridge) and ample capacity for future growth. The design also allocated additional space for goods-in and sortation areas to improve workflow.
- Three-Tier Pick Tower with Mezzanines: Designed to handle 2,800 product locations, with reverse-feed powered conveyors and pallet gates ensuring safety and efficiency. The modular design allows for future expansion with an additional floor.
- Safety and Efficiency Features: In-rack sprinkler systems, anti-collapse wire mesh, and a single-finger build installation method were incorporated to meet the demands of a busy distribution centre.
The Outcome: Future-Proof Manufacturing Racking Systems
Hellermann Tyton successfully transitioned to the new Cannock facility, gaining:
