The Challenge: Meeting Archival Standards and Maximising Space

The Black Cultural Archives, the UK’s first dedicated Black heritage centre, required an integrated storage solution to preserve and protect their extensive archive collection. The project needed to meet PD5454 standards for archival storage while providing a modern and flexible library shelving system. Key challenges included preventing moisture ingress, mitigating light exposure, and maximising storage capacity within the available space.

The Approach: Tailored Archival and Library Storage Solutions

Link51 collaborated closely with the Black Cultural Archives team to design and install a tailored storage solution. For the archive, a combination of static and mobile Stormor shelving was implemented, featuring a trackless mobile system to ensure clear and unobstructed aisles. ActiveCoat® anti-microbial protection was applied to safeguard against mould. In the library, Link51 installed 180 linear metres of Stormor static shelving, finished with timber-effect cladding to complement the contemporary design. Shelves were fully adjustable to accommodate future needs.

The Solution: Mobile Shelving for Archives and Flexible Library Storage

The new storage system maximised space and capacity while meeting preservation requirements. The trackless mobile shelving in the archive improved accessibility and ensured minimal disruption, while the library shelving provided a flexible and aesthetically pleasing solution for 7,000 catalogued books.

The Result: Increased Capacity and Enhanced Preservation

The solution increased storage efficiency and capacity, ensuring the Black Cultural Archives could continue preserving valuable collections for future generations. Both the archive and library now have adaptable systems that support their growing needs while maintaining a modern and functional environment.
