Protecting the UK's Film Heritage – BFI Master Store

The BFI National Archive, one of the largest film archives in the world, preserves British and international films and television programs. It stores around 140 million feet of nitrate and acetate film across multiple sites, with the BFI Master Film Store at Gaydon, Warwickshire, housing the most valuable collections. This 3,000 sq m fire-resistant facility uses advanced technologies to maintain optimal storage conditions and protect films.

Challenge: High-Capacity Fire-Resistant & Temperature Controlled Storage

The BFI needed a high-capacity, fire-resistant, and environmentally controlled storage solution for its extensive nitrate and acetate film collection. The facility required maintaining a temperature of -5°C and 35% relative humidity to prevent deterioration, while also incorporating robust fire protection measures.

Approach: Tailored Film Archive Storage Solutions

Link51 was chosen to design and install a mass storage solution that would be effective in the sub-zero climate. The shelving needed to be maintenance-free and safe for workers who would have limited exposure to the cold storage areas. Link51 collaborated with building contractors and architects to meet these unique requirements.

Solution: Mobile Shelving & Fire-Safe Storage Systems

The storage system primarily used Mobile Stormor Shelving units for the 36 film cells, allowing for easy access and retrieval of film cans. Static shelving was installed in smaller nitrate cells, with all shelving designed to accommodate the width of the film cans. Fire safety measures included shelving fixed away from walls and wire mesh panels for extra security.

Results: Efficient Film Storage with Room for Expansion

Link51 installed 27km (17 miles) of shelving across the facility, providing capacity for 458,000 cans and allowing for future expansion. The shelving system ensured optimal conditions for film preservation while meeting stringent fire safety requirements.
